Delhi.... It's time to 'Roar Macha'

Updated: Apr 16, 2020

The Capital City ‘Delhi’ has produced many legends of the game (Viru, Gambhir, Kohli, Shikhar, Nehra, Ishant) but its IPL team is yet to win an IPL title. It is the only founding member team to not have reached an IPL Final. We always come across Delhi vs Mumbai comparisons, but when it comes to IPL the Mumbai franchise is way ahead of Delhi’s. If we analyze what went wrong with the Delhi Capitals team for the past few years, they were experimenting a lot. They kept on changing their squad, support staff and nothing was working for them. Finally, this year, they have got the team that would go into IPL as favorites to win the title.

When it comes to the strategy of the Delhi capitals, they were clear that their 2019 team lacked in experience. So, just before the auction they have signed up Ajinkya Rahane and Ravi Ashwin through the transfer window. They have released players like Colin Munro, Chris Morris, Colin Ingram who failed miserably in 2019.

Based on the releases they have made, we have thought the strategy for the Auction would be:

  • They would go for explosive players like Shimron Hetmyer, Lynn, Jason Roy to keep the balance of the team, since its top 3 batsmen Dhawan, Rahane, Iyer strike only at mid 120s.

  • An experienced foreign bowler who can bowl in the death along with Rabada

In the Auction, the Delhi Capitals made sure that they have a proper mix of Youngsters and Experienced. Before the auction the Delhi was criticized for building a test team for T20s, when they signed up Rahane and Ashwin. But they had roped in Jason Roy, Shimron Hetmyer who would be adding more firepower to their steady batting. They have also signed Chris Woakes and Marcus Stoinis who are genuine allrounders to replace Morris.

Probable Playing XI

  1. Jason Roy

  2. Prithvi Shaw

  3. Shikhar Dhawan

  4. Shreyas Iyer

  5. Shimron Hetmyer

  6. Rishabh Pant

  7. Marcus Stoinis/ Chris Woakes

  8. Axar Patel/Amit Mishra

  9. Ravi Ashwin

  10. Kagiso Rabada

  11. Ishant Sharma

Probably Delhi is the only team, which can have its own India XI with no foreign players and still go on to challenge other teams. So, ‘Roar Macha’ Delhi walon, they have plenty of reasons to support their side this season and they are the favorites to make it to their first IPL Finals!
